I had this noise. It was from the motor that switches the air to fresh or recirculating. Also the crank arm on the motor had broken off.
I repaired it But something is amiss as the motor turns the crank arm further than the stops- subsequently breaking my repaired arm. Not sure if the wrong parts have beeen used previously? stilll investigating.
