Don't take the wheel off. I'm a big guy too and I was able to get in there, and I don't have a lift. Like you, I was concerned about the loose fit for the metal rod but it seems to work well enough. Maybe Aluminum Stop Arm (rev B) will have a grommet or at least a smaller drilled hole for a better fit. Another improvement they could make is to open up that shaft hole a bit. As you said, the fit is too tight. I had to chamfer the edges to fit it on the shaft.
