I've read everything I can find on sludge, after learning that the 00-03 SAAB 4-cyl engines had reputations as "sludge monsters." Well, that kind of sensationalism is fine, but most of my reading points to two changes, even though motor oils have become dramatically better in the last 20 years.
One is the changes made by car manufacturers (e.g. low-friction engines) during that same time to cope with demands for lower emissions and higher efficiency, and at the same time boost the power of their engines. The second, as previously mentioned in this thread, is the "low maintenance" extended oil changes that have now become pretty standard. The first makes greater demands on the oil, the second requires that the oil keep doing its job longer.
I also think that turbocharged engines are harder on any oil, but I've seen nothing demonstrating that.
There is also a body of opinion that points to SAAB's PCV system as a culprit in sludge formation, but a lot of the anecdotes I've read point to the deterioration of the PCV system in an older vehicle as the culprit. Therefore, repairing / replacing the PCV components is the answer to this, not anything to do with oil changes.
I think it is very important to do O&F changes on SAAB 4-cyl turbocharged engines at intervals of no more than 5K miles, and that is with the proviso that only a top-rated synthetic is used. I use nothing but Mobil 1 0W-40 in our 9-5 wagon (just as I have in the previous two 9-5s), and a SAAB, Purolator, or Wix filter.
