(PIC) Bosch plugs with 54 K miles, how bad are they?

Just swapped out the BOSCH spark plugs. These had 54 K miles on them.
BEFORE: car idled poorly, seemed 'louder' and rougher. Was thinking the idle timing needed adjusting....
AFTER: NGK BCPR6ES (gapped at 0.039) transplant, car idled smooth and quietly (as quietly as a car that needs its exhaust replaced, Simons perf. kit from GenSaab is on order, delayed ship from Sweden)
So how bad are these plugs anyhow? It looks like there is a fair bit of carbon build up. I've never done plug swaps on the Saabs before now... (only owned them 1 year for 01 wagon, and 1 month for 99 sedan), so I don't have a frame of reference for what Bad really is.
Thanks!
2001 9-5 SE wagon (84.5K miles)
