New motor help

Hello,
I recently bought a 1999 9-5 wagon (4-cylinder engine) that now is in need of a new motor (sludge). I was hoping to get some help with the following questions:
- What are thoughts on a rebuilt vs. used engine? Generally speaking, what is the cost for those? Would a rebuilt engine be susceptible to the sludge problem?
- The car's got 72,000 miles on it -- are there any other trouble spots/big fixes I should be aware of that might pop up?
I like the car quite a bit, but I'm questioning putting the money into it seeing as how it still has the temporary tags on it and I'm already faced with replacing the engine.
(Background: Had an independent Saab shop check it out before purchase -- they pulled the valve cover and said there was some sludge but it looked okay, so I bought it; three weeks later the check engine light came on and they dropped the oil pan and found metal chunks in it); they put it back together and it drove okay for a week until I got it on the interstate and it lost power, the dash lit up like a pinball machine and smoke started pouring out of the left side of the engine and out the tailpipe; once it stopped smoking I tried to start it and ... nothing.)
Any thoughts/insight would be appreciated. Thanks.
