If you have relatively soft (read high performance) tires, then 5K would be about it. Also, if you have symmetric tires (directional or not) and you notice excessive inside edge wear, you might well have them flipped on the rims after a while. I had that done and the rear tire noise went away. For relatively long-wearing "ordinary" tires, 10K might work out OK. If you're not getting uneven wear or cupping, you can just burn off the fronts and then swap the new tires to the rear. Sadly, very few 9-5 owners can say they don't get uneven wear.
