Future maintenance...... Posted by Herb Hirsch [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: RE: Aero Maintenance....., Pollo, Sat, 21 Jul 2007 12:23:09 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
SLUDGE BUILDUP: The first thing to look at is the documented history of oil changes and filters. If this has been done every 5K miles and with synthetic oil the odds are in your favor....no sludge.
The only real check for sludge is to drop the oil pan and check. Optionally, you could connect an oil pressure gauge to location occupied by the oil pressure switch. After you've driven about 10-20 miles (to ensure a complete warmup) you should get a reading of 35-40 psi at 2,000 RPM.
FUTURE MAINTENANCE: After 75K miles certain items can go due to normal wear. Abuse and lack of good preventive maintenace doesn't usually play a part. Obviously, hard driving does effect the life expectancy of things such as rotors and pads. The list below is a start...others may disagree or add to it. I've limited it to those components that I have seen go between 75K and 275K miles.
1. shocks and struts
2. ball joints
3. A-frame rear bushings (270K miles)
4. Voltage regulator (preventively every 100K miles due to brush wear)
5. Fuel pump (273K miles)
6. Water pump (once at 80K miles
7. ABS computer module (250K mils)
8. Thermostat (250K miles)
9. Directional signal control stalk
10. DI cassette (never)
11. Front sway bar links (once at 150K miles)
12. Emergency brake cable assy. (the rubber seal ruptures by the rear wheel...water gets in and freezes during the coldest days of winter, locking up the rear wheel(s). You won't see any symptoms during the summer months. First time at 120K miles (ruptured); second time broken at 270K miles by running over a deer.
13. Infamous orange headlight control relay (easily fixed with a small soldering iron or by the daler for $150 - $200. No failures for me.
14. Cabin ventilation fan motor assy. (255K miles)
15. Crankshaft seal (180K miles)
16. Front wheel bearings (200K miles)
17. Motor mount under the battery (205K miles)
18. Theft alarm batteries
19. Serpentine belt and pulleys (either replace these preventively every 60K or assume that you'll be towed at some point and then replace them
20. Engine temperature sensor (220K miles)
21. Battery (the big one on the driver's side). Every three years or so.
22. Tiny battery in the key handle (once)
23. Bulbs here and there
24. Vacuum and other hoses
25. SID display
26. Brake pads and rotors (front every 100K miles; rears once at 200K miles)
27. Exhaust system components (although I haven't replaced a thing after 275K miles). The more you drive the longer the life.
28. Clutch, prssure plate and slave servo (never for me even after 275K miles)
29. Transmision (never for me even after 275K miles)
30. Heater control valve (272K miles)
31. Turbo boost bypass valve (270K miles)
32. Throttle body (never for me even after 275K miles)
33. Turbocharger and wastegate (never for me even after 275K miles)
Note that many of these parts have failed on my 2000 Aeroa fter 200K, or even 250K miles and in some cases never. Others on this BB have had different experiences.
