Technically yes. But? Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] (#112) [Profile/Gallery] (more from SWEDECAR) on Tue, 24 Jul 2007 08:36:52 In Reply to: Should I worry about sludge @ 20k miles?, Barrett, Mon, 23 Jul 2007 16:44:19 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
It all comes down to driving style and how many oil changes has been done.
The picture is from a 2001 9-3 with about 16K miles when it came into the shop in 2004.
It had seen one oil change at 5K and the other at 15K (which was already too late),done at the dealer with whatever oil they decided to use.
The valve cover looked a lot worse with layers and layers of coked oil around the timing chain side.
This car was driven very short trips every day back and forth to work and never got a chance to warm up fully.
So yes it is possible to create sludge like that in short miles and that is the reason why the insurance companies in Sweden forced Saab to that extended engine warranty since the insurance companies suddenly had to pay out more money for engine repairs and replacements than ever before.
Lately though, we have seen and heard less and less of these engines so it seems that something has gotten better and that could be as easy as to that even the dealer is suggesting less miles between oil changes and also maybe using different oil.
