Ah, the memories...old pickup trucks... Posted by Caarl [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Shifting fun and games, Stephen Goldberger, Tue, 24 Jul 2007 08:40:20 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
What Stephen describes is you used to shift before synchros were invented. I never had a truck that was quite that old, but I drove some with pretty well shot synchros and that's what you did. One of them would kick so hard that if you forgot to double clutch you had to crawl under it and unjam the linkage. And most all pickups and a lot of cars had 3-speed manuals with no synchro in first so you had to learn this technique if you ever drove hilly, windy roads. (I can't believe my 9-5 has synchro in REVERSE fer cryin out loud! We are sooooo spoiled nowadays....)
I once drove my old pickup about 100 miles home after my clutch master cylinder failed, using a very similar technique. Put it in first and crank the starter to get going then sync-shift up and down as needed. Slips right in/out of gear when the RPMs match. I got some funny looks at stop lights. And it cost me $17.00 to fix it. That's $1700.00 in Saab dollars.
OK I'll get out of geezer mode. Anyone with experience shifting an old Saab with the freewheel can chime in now.
