I recently bought one. There is no such thing as a 9-5 v6 non-turbo. the performance is quite similar to a 2.3T in the 9000, but the delivery is smoother.
The sport button does 2 things for what I know:
- changes the travel/ angle of the throttle as a function of pedal travel;
- changes the upshift points of the transmission.
I don't know for sure if it also changes the fuel/air mixture but I don't think so.
Like LesH says: you need to stay on top of the timing belt or get punished. 67k is low mileage but critical as it should have been changed at 60k WITH the tensioners and pulleys. Apart from that it is a unproblematic engine. The 4-cyl used to be that way as well for the 9000, but going to the 9-5 some design changes and prolonged oil change intervals resulted in a widespread black sludge issue. The V6 does not suffer from such a problem. Also, the head gasket on the V6 is a non-issue as opposed to the 4-cyl which is higher boost and has an iron block and alu head with different expansion co-efficients.
I think I still would have a preference for the 4-cyl, though. I like the 'punch' of the 2.3T.
As for GM taking over: at the time this car was produced GM already had a 50% stake in Saab for some 10 years. The engine is basically a GM global design and you will find variants of it in Opel Omega and Cadillac models.
Saab dropped the engine somewhere in 2003. People like to state that this was because it dawned on GM the 4-cyl was 'better' and the V6 did not add much. Which may be true, but I suspect it may have to do more with the discontinuation of this particular engine in favour of a new 3.2 V6. I don't think it was viable at that time to 'Saabify' it again.
