I bought my car with a salvage title 2.5 years ago. It was hit in the driver's door area. Both doors and the B pillar were replaced. You would never know by looking at the car. I paid roughly 1/2 the going retail price at the time, which I think is very good value. I have no had no problems with the car at all.
Remember - all a "salvage title" means is that an insurance company decided that some nominal book value was cheaper cheaper for them to pay than paying a bodyshop to fix the car at retail price. In the case of my car, a body shop bought the car for salvage and fixed it basically in thier spare time as a make-work project for the help.
I do think you need to be extremely cautious about repaired cars - for instance I would not ever buy a flood car. But it doesn't take much of a hit to "total" a car at retail prices these days. I was very lightly rear-ended in my car recently and it was ~$800 just to repaint the rear bumper - they didn't even replace anything!
