The serpentine belt is the belt you can see at the end of the engine. It drives the accessories like water pump, power steering, alternator, A/C.
The 4 cyl engines can use a long (original length) serpentine belt that goes around all the pulleys, or a short (replacement length) belt that skips the center pulley since the center is more difficult to replace. The short belt causes excessive noise/vibration on some cars (like mine) so we are forced back to the long belt (mmmm...silence.)
The V6 engine has only one serpentine belt option (no 'short belt').
Serpentine belts should be replaced every 60k. The smaller pulleys (on the 4-cyl, the small idler pulley, on the 6, the tensioner pulley) should be replaced at that time. The larger pulleys (4-cyl tensioner pulley and center idler) may be good for 120k.
The 4 cyl engines have a timing chain. The V6 engines have a timing belt. These drive the camshafts and are inside the engine and not visible. The 4-cyl timing chain only needs replacement if it's worn out, and may last the life of the car.
The V6 timing belt is an essential regular maintenance item. Each 60k miles the belt should be replaced along with the tensioner and pulleys. Saab pays for the belt and labour at 60k - it's up to you to pay for the tensioner and pulleys. Failing to perform this maintenance could mean a destroyed engine if the belt breaks or slips.
