Several months back I had the CEL come on with a code P0134 oxygen sensor. I took it to the dealer and he diagnosed it to a faulty O2 sensor and went ahead and replaced it. Since then I have had the CEL come on 2-3 times. Couple of times I had the AutoZone guys clear the code and once it went away by itself.
The peculiar observation that I made is that everytime I had the AutoZone guys clear the CEL code, my car's battery would drain and the guys will have to jump-start my car.
I never thought it to be anything of concern until last night when the same thing happened and the battery drained. He jumped the car and tried to test it but was unsuccessful, so out of shear frustation the AutoZone guy replaced my battery (it was under warranty by them) and gave a brand new one. Then when he tested the charging system it indicated charging voltage too low. I was able to drive it until just few hours back, while driving all kinds of dashboard lights came on (ABS,BRAKE, BATTERY etc.) along with a intermittent beeping sound. They went away when I turned the AC off. I am assuming the battery load was reduced when I did that.
Could the CEL problem and the charging system problem be related ? Could the charging system be malfunctioning due to a bad alternator, voltage regulator (?) etc. I called the dealer and they gave me an estimate of about $600-700 to diagnose and replace a faulty alternator.
Any advice from the experts ? Thanks
Regards,
Vishnu
