Valve cover was pretty clean inside, not perfect, but average for well maintained engine.
Oil brand and weight ?
*** The car had about four oil changes at dealer before 55k km when I bought it. Since then changed at 8-10k km with either Castrol Syntec 0W-30 or Esso XD-3 Synthetic 0W-30. The Syntec is ACEA A3/B3 rated; the Esso is not (as it is intended as a commercial/industrial vehicle oil) but a variety of oil analyses and the factory specs show it as equivalent or superior. Both are thick 30 weights and at operating temp are ALMOST a 40. I'm not worried about the oil being 'too thin'.
Last three oil filter changes have used Napa Gold PT Turbo filters, which are larger than the stock Saab size.
Manual or automatic ?
*** 4sp automatic.
Stop and go or highway miles ?
*** A good mix. The car is not driven to work daily (I bus) but wife uses for shopping etc. Weekends often see 300km and 3000-5000km summer trips have happened. I've put on 85k km in the 3.5 years I've owned it.
Winter weather here is commonly -30C but the block heater is plugged in overnight below about -15C. Car is parked outside. Summers up to 38C.
There is a slight whine at start for maybe 30 seconds. Some reports blame this on blocked oil pickup; as you can see there was hardly any blockage. Haven't driven the car from cold yet to see if that's entirely gone away.
