But the "200 hp" upgrade still boosts torque a little. Marketing dictated that the LPT 4 cylinder be slower than the V-6, despite its lower weight. That pretty well set the power limit.

I had tested a manual shift '99 LPT wagon for NINES and I found it pretty well lacking, even when empty of stuff and passengers. Once it hit 3500 rpm, it pretty much bogged down, making passing a little dicey. I think with the 200 hp it's a lot better. Remember that acceleration is made by the excess of driving torque over drag. 30 hp may be just 15 or 20%, but between half and a quarter of the total power is balanced by drag, so the effect on acceleration is up to double that.

On the cost side of the ledger, there's a big difference between the hundreds of dollars asking price "back then" and the ten bucks at the convention.
