Low Volume from Rear Speakers

I have a 99 9-5 2.3L (non-aero).
I have a HK stereo with the standard configuration of speakers (no discrete subwoofer, unlike my 01 9-5 SE wagon (with the high end HK system)).
I recently had the rear shelf out for installation of tether points (car seats) at the dealer.
I was doing a road trip a week or so ago, and noticed that the rear speakers are markedly lower volume than the fronts (when I used the Fade towards rear).
Even at Max volume (lets say 10 is max), the fronts play at 10 and the rears sound like they are playing at 5. Fading to rear still only has a max volume level of 5.
I want to know if there is something wrong with this? Or is this correct? If I want to improve this, can I upgrade the AMP, with a higher level one (say from an ARC or Aero with the Premium package), or are they the same?
If I find a Saab amp (Prestige the highest level??) from someplace like Fleeabay will I just be able to plug and play, or do I have to marry unit to the car?
Will I be able to add a discrete Subwoofer to the Premium amps (an aftermarket sub) for instance?
Thanks for any insight into this..
