Random dissertation on onstar... kinda long. Posted by Johnson [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: IS ONSTAR UPGRADABLE ON 2002 9-5 AERO?, scottb2460, Fri, 31 Aug 2007 20:25:02 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
As I work for Verizon, and deal with this kind of issue on a daily basis, and I hate to crush any hopes and dreams... but here it goes:
I was asked earlier about whether an onstar upgrade will be available, and here was my response.
I'm sorry to hear that, yeah because it is analog it is all turning off on the first of Jan 2008. The only suggestion I really can make is go blue tooth for now for hands free calling. You cell phone will almost always work for 911 calls. As far as equipment for onstar, I don't have any info, I only really get info on cell phones themselves not on specialty equipment. GM has not released any information on new equipment, or replacement equipment for cars with analog systems. And I would have to admit that there isn't a huge market for them, especially for saabs, maybe for a more popular vehicle, but I don't think their are enough saab drivers who also use onstar. so if a cell phone company were to make them it would be a limited run, making it very expensive, and if GM were to offer it, it would probably be installed for free in fear of people doing something stupid like suing them. And they are struggling for money as is. And as far as Verizon, I think they would be happy to do it to keep people with us and under contract, BUT the problem lies with again getting the limited production made vs. money actually made on the contract with cust. And also installation? Who would do it? If it was a Verizon part the GM dealers would stay hands off and 3rd party groups would make a hash of it, and be unreliable and if there were issues after install who's to blame? The logistics are too much. So basically I’m crushing your hopes as best I can, as I don't see it as a possibility. Again I go back to blue tooth, I went that route and have enjoyed it, it has worked for me. And my needs.
Verizon had a lot of upset customers, I'm thinking that there is a slim possibility something will come out last min. I think Verizon will put in a big push for it once the # of customers that will be lost is really understood. I'm sure there will be a generic device that is not vehicle specific like they are now, that will replace the current analog systems.
anyways, just a thought.
