ACC programming - (Bruce?)

In a previous thread, Bruce posted that the Auto mode of the ACC was configurable. See the quote below.
---------------------
The auto mode *IS* configurable... I have it set so that the ACC is OFF when starting the car (just like you do). Then when I hit the "ON" button the system comes up with the ECON selection on (no compressor running), fan speed set medium and directed at middle vents, and the temperature set at 74. How do you do this? Easy...
Make your choices and then press the two buttons (fan speed up and ECON) to make em stick. Then press the OFF button, and then finally press the two settings buttons again. Done. It's even explained in the manual if you read between the lines...
---------------------
After looking back through the manual and playing with my car, I can't get the operation described. If I program the ACC to be off at startup, then when I turn it on via the "Auto" or "Off" button, it always comes up in full auto operation (assuming that the car has been off for > 10 min).
Bruce, can you please clearify your description? The is no "On" button, and I'm not sure what "press the two buttons" means. I assumed the 2 buttons were "Off" and "rear defrost".
My goal is to have the ACC off at startup, and to use some programmed manual settings when turned on. My car is a U.S. model 2000 Aero, in case it matters. Thanks!
