Like Les I have used 215/55R16 with good success. I like the Michelin Pilot Alpines in that size. They work very well in deep snow, they'e quiet on dry pavement, and they last. They even work fairly well on wet pavement.
As an added bonus use of that size does not introduce any speedometer error; I know, I did calibration tests with both the 225/45/17 summer tire and 215/55R16 snows. Saab recommends this size of snow tire.
Within another couple of months Saab may have a wheel and tire special (215/55R16 snows)...they've done that often. Last year I picked up a set of 4 for $650...including alloy wheels!
