How to keep in 2nd gear with 5-spd auto trans?

My '02 9-5 Linear gear selector has D-4-3-L for forward gears, and Sport and Winter mode switches -- no paddle shifter or +/- buttons. I just moved to the Rocky Mountains from "flat" Michigan, and have to drop about 1500' elevation in 2 miles several times each day on a 20-30 mph road. I really need 2nd gear for engine braking!!! The 3 position does virtually nothing at these speeds, and 1st gear is so slow that traffic backs up, or I have to wail the engine at >5000 rpm.
I try to "catch" 2nd by running up to 30 mph in 3rd, then shifting to L so that the overspeed lockout gives me 2nd gear for a few seconds before I slow for a curve and the transmission drops into 1st at about 26 mph. This just does not work!
The local dealer says nothing can be done. Does anyone have alternative solutions? Since the engine controller electrically enables the gears, can I fake a paddle shifter command?
