Actually...
r2 x ð
2.5 inch diameter pipe has a 1.25 inch radius (r)
(1.25 x 1.25) x ð
1.5625 x 3.14159 = 4.90874 sq in.
3 inch diameter pipe has a 1.5 inch r
(1.5 x 1.5) x ð
2.25 x 3.14159 = 7.06858 sq in.
Difference
Difference in area (3.0 vs. 2.5) 7.06858 - 4.90874 = 2.15984
2.5 inch is 69.4% the size of a 3 inch (4.90874/7.06858 = 69.4%)
or 30.5% smaller (2.15984/7.06858 = 30.5%)
3 inch is 44% increase over 2.5 inch (2.15984/4.90874 = 44%)
or 144% the size of a 2.5 inch (7.06858/4.90874 = 144%)
Since the “initial value” is 2.5 inches; therefore, it should be stated that converting to a 3 inch pipe increases the area by 44% over the 2.5 inch pipe.
