...a sensor mounted in the location of the drain plug would do little more than measure oil temperature.

Oil pressure can be measured by placing the sensor where the oil pressure switch is currently located. Therein lies a problem; there isn't any room there; the starter is in the way.

My solution has been the same whether you are using a VDO or SPA sensor. Replace the oil pressure switch with a hose coupling with a 14 X 1.5mm fitting. Connect the other end of the hose to a junction block. I did this as a means of retaining use of the original pressure switch for the idiot light. The new VDO or SPA sensor is then fitted to the same junction block. Note that if you use a VDO sensor containing a switch and resistive element for the gauge you will not need a junction block; hardware to connect the hose to the VDO sensor is all that you'll need.

My reason for using the junction block is that I prefer the SPA gauge; I purchased the model that contains a voltmeter and oil pressure gauge within one unit (std. 2.125" housing). Also, the gauge contains a small computer that allows you to set up various parameters such as an integral idiot light (I set mine to come on at 15 psi.)

If you send me an email I'll send you pictures of the gauge mounted in a
9-5 dash. The mounting approach would be the same whether you chose the VDO or SPA gauge.
