Playing MP3 by replacing CD unit - possible?

Since the Radio-CD unit on my 2003 wagon does cannot read MP3 disks, I was thinking of a possibility of replacing the CD unit in the radio with a more modern version that can read MP3's. I think the unit is made by Pioneer. If there was a new unit with the same mechanical size to fit in the radio, I see no problem. All the logic and electronics to read MP3 is in the unit itself. The only out from a CD is the audio. I think it even may recognise the steering wheel button signals. Does this sound far fetched?
