Sludge clogs the pickup screen resulting in reduced oil pressure and oil starvation.
So surely if your turbo is starved for oil, it would die an early death. But so would your top end ... and bottom end for that matter. I would think if the oil pressure is low enough to kill a turbo, it would have already killed your engine.
does you engine sound like a diesel engine? (rattling, clanging)
I would consider doing (or have done) any or all of the following:
- Measure the oil pressure with a reliable, mechanical oil pressure gauge.
- Pull the valve cover and take a look see. post pics so we all can see what you find.
- Drain the oil, use a borescope to examine the pickup screen & nooks and crannies of the pan. You are looking for coffee grounds or worse clogging the pickup screen.
- drop the pan for the final absolute word on sludge. You can DIY (see fixmysaab.com) or have a good mechanic do it ... it should be more in the $200-$300
