Mine cost me around $1100 to fix at the deealership earlier this summer, although around $300 of that may have been the bad oil pressure sensor they found. These prices don't include the tow to the Dealer either!
In 20-20 hindsight: I should have had the car towed the two miles to my home instead of the 20 miles to the Dealer, rented a cheap car for the 3 or 4 days it would have required to obtain the new fuel pump, and replaced the pump myself.
But like you, I could only make a strong educated guess at the cause of the problem when the car was sitting dead on the side of the road.
