Critical to operation are viscosity and friction properties. This is why the later ('02 on) cars need a special fluid - the frictional properties required by the slipping torque converter clutchare unique. Any fluid meeting Dexron specifications of the required level will have the needed viscosity and friction characteristics.
Secondary to the above, but still very important, is the additive package - anti-oxidants, detergents, etc. Again, any fluid meeting the relevant Dexron spec has enough of it.
After that, the choice between synthetic and natural base oil is yours to make. Note that the current Dexron specs can not be met with purely natural (Group I) base oils. As API and manufacturers' requirements become ever more stringent, the inevital processing of lubricant base stock to higher grades (Group II, Group II+) is blurring the distinction between "synthetic" and "conventional" products.
In other words, it's OK, but the benefit may not be as great as you think.
