Sluggish & hesitating then won't turnover...

'03 Arc 95 w/ 68K miles
SYMPTOMS: Last week, car would have hard starts. Would take 3 or 4 cranks until it turned over. Wife said that it would hesitate and lunge while driving, w/ "check engine" light coming on. Would not get up to speed (even to 50 mph) without hesitation. She had it in "Sport" mode while it was happening.
I drove it, and disengaged the "Sport" mode and drove fine until I could get a fuel cleaner by STP (the $7 btl) to see if the fuel lines could just use a little cleaning. It has been driving fine since then -- no hesitation, no check engine light...nothing!
Today, coming home and driving no more than 40 mph, and I feel the hesitation, as I apply even pressure on accelerator. Just tried to go out to run an errand & the car will NOT turnover. There have been NO signs that it could be an electrical or alternator issue. Battery is less than 4 mos old, and I'm sure its not the starter since it will crank but not turnover.
Any ideas? I've had this car over 2 years now with only 1 issue since then (a fuel pump assembly replacement).
Could it be the same fuel pump assembly issue?? I could use any suggestions or dianoses if you have an idea what it may be. I'd hate to take the car to the dealer.
Thanks!
