alternator replacement question and alternative approac

On my '00 V6 wagon, I tried an alternative approach to replacing the alternator. I read all the horror stories about removing it through the side and all the items that have to be removed in order to do so.
First off my replacement alternator has a closed back with an opening for what looks like a vent hose. My old alternator didn't have this and I have no hose to connect it to. Does anyone know of any issues if I don't have a hose connected? Or can I retro-fit a hose?
I tried removing the alternator through the back, between the firewall and the rear bank of the engine. I removed the belt tensioner assembly, and the pass side motor mount (like you do for replacing serpentine belt), loosened the rear motor mount bolt, and then I was able to move the engine forward enough to gain clearance to remove the alternator. You have to clear the AC lines and the rear of the engine, but with a helper holding the engine forward, there was enough room. I cut out a plastic gallon bottle and wrapped it around the alternator so it wouldn't catch too much on the insulation of the fire wall.
Just thought I'd share this since it was a lot easier than the "official" way.
