Some time after the 99 model year the design was changed to keep leaves and other debris from getting into the squirrel cage. The card in the spoke sound has been the sound most use in describing the event. After that comes the sound of a low pitch jet. My 9-5 has done both on more than one occasion. I believe that if the crap isn't removed by breaking up, it will cause premature failure of the blower motor. I say this because the original motor went on mine just before 50k miles. I had experienced many occurances of the noises described above. Since then, just a few have happened and have not lasted very long. 160,000 miles on the current motor. Go figure ;)-
