Many, many folks who had 9-5s also have multiple Saabs and many have 9-5s and 9-3SS' sharing the driveway and are fond of both.
The smaller 9-3SS is slightly larger in every front seat dimension, leg room, head room, shoulder room, all measure greater on the 9-3SS. Until the 2006 V6 9-3SS the 210hp 9-3SS motor just isn't the monster the 2.3 HOT in the 9-5 is. The 9-3SS stereo sucks compared to the Harmon Kardon in the 9-5. No SportWagon in the 9-3SS until the '06 SportCombi. The 9-3SS slapshifter is so much better than the 9-5 paddle thing. Your 2001 9-5 had the magnificent wood dash, best looking Saab insides of all time, IMHO. 9-3SS interiors occasionally have decent wood, 2005 Arcs with the premium package come to mind, but lotsa' fake wood or no wood, and nowhere as nice as the dark burled walnut up to 2001. 9-3SS handles better with slightly better weight distribution and the rear-steer characteristics of the rear suspension, called Re-Ax. 9-5 sport seats are the best Saab seats of all time and 9-5 seats come vented as an option. 9-5's are "tighter" IMHO. 9-3SS can be tight, but it takes some work securing the headliner and stuff, and the aluminum suspension components are not as well damped.
