I have not read much on this board concerning the transmission problem I experienced, so I thought I'd share it in case anybody else has a similar situation.
Back in July or August my wife complained the transmission felt like it was slipping. I confirmed and consulted this board as to the possible cause and fix. I went with the 3x drain and fill, as recommended. Of course, being in Middle GA I could not find SAAB transmission fluid, so I went to the Toyota dealership and picked up their Type IV.
After completing the drain and fill there was noticeable improvement in the transmission...for a while. In September, my wife managed to get into the neighborhood before the car went into "I-can-barely-limp-home" mode. The car literally stopped moving in front of the house. A short while later I went out and was able to get the car into the driveway, but as soon as the transmission fluid warmed up the car would stop moving. I ended up towing (thank you '97 Dodge Ram)the car to the nearest dealership in Atlanta who, several days later, recommend I replace the transmission. My extended warranty company didn't much care for that idea so they had it towed to the local AAMCO dealer to have it re-built.
After tearing down the transmission they discovered the piston on the stator was broken. Several of the teeth were broken or ground down. They ended up replacing the clutches, pump, filter; really just about everything, as far as I can tell. As to the cause, nobody knows. Could it have been the Toyota transmission fluid? Or did we get a lemon transmission? If anyone can think of the cause I'd like to hear it.
It took a couple of weeks for the rebuild as they had not worked on a SAAB before so it took a while to get all the correct parts. It appears the wait was worth it as the car is performing very well. I tip my hat to the guys on Jonesboro Rd.
Cost? Warranty company; $3,200.00. Me; $50.00
