Does this sound reasonable and is there anything I should look out for? A few months ago the indie saab shop that I like and have done business with for years left the oil plug loose on my 03 9-5 aero with 57k and fried the engine. They fessed up and replaced it with what I thought was a new engine...I asked every time I spoke with them if it was new and they always gave what I thought was an unequivocable yes. I finally got the paperwork from them after five months of repeated requests and discovered that it was a salvaged engine and turbo from Greenleaf with 63k and that they also replaced all of the major gaskets, incuding the head. Now the idea of a brand new engine did seem too good to be true but my feeling is that I should get at least a comparable if not better engine than the original. The engine, but not turbo, has a one year warranty. In 8 years this is the only problem I've had with this shop, and although I am unhappy with the miscommunications, I trust that they did not put in a garbage engine. However, to my mind the car is now worth less if I try to sell it, not only because it has 5000 extra miles on the engine and turbo, but because I now have to disclose that it has a salvaged engine. Would you buy a car like that? Does it lower the value? By how much? Would you value it less even if you knew and trusted the mechanic? I still have some trust left since they could just have easily popped a hole in the oil pan and claimed road hazard and left me holding the bag...it certainly would have cost them alot less money. Thoughts? Opinions? Suggestions?
