I hope your repair is not as extensive as mine was. I had same issue with my 1999 (9/5 wagon 103K miles). I am not able to any repairs myself, and so I brought it to a local SAAB dealer for evaluation. They said that the car was not worth bothering with. SAAB USA offered me $1500 certificate to buy a new SAAB. A local mechanic said they would install a used engine but the also recommended against it. Finally, thanks to the mechanic link on this website, I found a mechanic who recommended replacing the left and right cylinder heads, as well as the timing belt, tensioner (obviously). He did replace the head bolt, seal rings (4), belt, guide, thermostat, tube, lots of o-rings, seal rings and gaskets, and finally the water pump.
I hope this helps you out. All of this set me back $5800 but that was cheaper than a used engine. I just picked up the car tonight and it purrs!
We need a campaign to warn other unsuspecting SAAB drivers that they MUST change tensioner when change timing belt.
