The reason for replacing shocks and springs are very different. The need to replace shocks is based upon wear and an accompanying degradation of performance. The need to replace springs is based upon sagging or broken springs....not a very common occurrence. My last 9-5 went 280K miles before I sold it....and never needed rear spring replacement.
I have replaced rear shocks on my 9-5 a couple of times over the course of 280K miles. I've done it both with and without a spring compressor. On the 9-5 the tension is low so manually holding down the spring with your body weight is doable. Admittedly, use of a spring compressor is easier and safer. I've had an inexpensive spring compressor from KD Tools (About $40.00).
You mentioned squeaking. This may be caused by the shocks but there are other possible causes. You haven't indicated the mileage on the rear shocks. Others may agree or not.....if your rear shocks have more than 75K-100K miles replace them, and spray some teflon, silicon or lithium grease into the sway bar bushings.
