My Dad recently purchased a 2005 9-5 Arc with xenon headlights. He asked me to post this question about his headlights turning off while driving. Based on a quick search, the problem seems to be a relay with cracked solder joints. Any other thoughts?

Thanks,
-=Keith=-

"We have been having a problem with the xenon headlights. The problem has been "flickering" of the left light. Then, last weekend, we were driving home from Vermont in the dark. The lights (it seemed both sides) would flicker, more, it seems, as they were warming up. Then, two times, both headlights went out for a few seconds and then came back on. We still had some lights in front, I'm thinking maybe the daylight running lights. It would be a little scary if the lights went out and stayed out!

I called the place we bought the car from since we are still under a 60-day warranty. We brought the car down there this evening, driving with the lights on. As we got near the dealer, the right headlight went out completely and did not come back on. There was no light of any kind on the right side, even a daytime light. The high beam switch did nothing, either. We shut the car off and went into the dealer's showroom. I drove the car into the shop 5 minutes later and the right light was working as I drove the car into the service area. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to the problem. Going over bumps didn't seem to have any affect on the problem. Looking back to the Vermont trip, it may have been the right light going out and the left staying on. Not sure. I'm hoping that the place we bought the car (not a Saab dealer) will be able to find the problem.

PS. According to the car history report, a headlight was replaced about 4,000 miles ago."
