The loose gas cap suggestion is a good one - cheap and quick.
The CEL is the only way the engine control has to tell you something is out of whack. Under the present laws (yes, laws!), the CEL has to come on if anything in the car is such that it may not be meeting emissions. Like a loose gas cap. But the engine is full of sensors. If a sensor is just out of range, it will generate a CEL. For many sensors, the engine control can adjust for the bad sensor. The result may be slightly worse mileage, slightly less performance, or increased emissions (see CEL).
First, do a quick scan of the engine compartment (after tightening the gas cap). See any hoses off or cracked? Any frayed wires?
Your best bet is to go to a local big-box autoparts store - Autozone, Pep Boys, etc., and have them read out the fault codes. Most do it for free, or lend you the reader and you can do it yourself in the parking lot.
Once you've read out the codes, DO NOT REPLACE PARTS. Yes, you'll get a code that might say 'Front O2 sensor' - that doesn't necessarily mean the O2 sensor is bad - that can also be a simple vacuum leak. Come back to the board (preferably the 9-5 board) with the codes and let the group think on them.
A bad temp sensor fault is usually a bad temp sensor. An O2 sensor fault is usually a vacuum leak or fuel system.
