You are right - you do not know much about AC.

First, condender and evaporator do not have any moving parts in them and do not rely on any lubrication.
Second, if by "condenser clutch" you mean compressor clutch then the clutch does not get lubricated either. The clutch is external to the compressor and is activated elegromagnetically like a solenoid.
Turning the AC off adds about 2-3 mpg in gentle highway driving. I get about 31 mpg with AC on and 34 mpg with AC off.
If Saab continues to advertise themselves as "green" company they should (1) rename ECON to "AC on/off" so people do not get confused (2) make it easier to switch AC on/off (e.g. remember the last settings without programmimg) or make it "AC off" default at the factory. The same people who would be turning AC on and off on other cars just leave it always on in Saab 9-5.
BTW, the current AC operation is an ergonomic nightmare. How am I supposet to remember to use AUTO+DEFROST to do programming, AUTO+OFF to do recalibrations, etc.
Running AC anytime the outside temperature exceeds 5C is just a waste of fuel.
