Just thought I'd share my throttle body story. Sunday morning after Thanksgiving, with wife and toddler, my 9-5 linear died suddenly at highway speed. Check engine light, virtually no power, and impossible to keep the car running unless gassed to the floor. (It would start, stumble, and then die within about 1 second.) So much for "limp home" mode. I suspected immediately that it was the TB in limp home, since the DI is recent and it did not have the burnt expoy smell under the hood, and my mom also got stranded with the same symptoms and problem in the same car about 18 months and 15,000 miles sooner.

We were in the boonies on the Eastern shore of Maryland. No dealer within 100+ miles. Fortunately only about 15 miles from my folks, so we had it towed home. I just about went postal on the AAA phone rep when they tried to tell me it might be the battery. After the tow, I bought a code scanner and pulled code P1230. (Note that the Actron scanner listing for P1230 suggests it's the MAF, when in fact it's the TB.) Anyhow, we cleaned the TB (not that dirty), reset limp home, and it ran like a champ. By now it was Sunday late afternoon, so with a 7-hour drive and a cranky toddler ahead of us, we stayed til Monday morning and drove back to NC the next day. Traffic was very light; it was a pleasant surprise. (We'll be doing the Thursday-Monday holiday next year, not the Wed-Sun madness!)

Instead of chancing it with the family, I ordered a new TB and we got to take dad's '07 9-5 wagon home for a week. He drove our car all week (no problems of course) and I went back and did the swap last weekend. It's running like a champ ever since.

The car has had all software updates and got PCV update #6 last December. Has had Mobil 1 OW-40 every 5K. Pretty clean engine.

My main beef is just that the stupid limp home mode didn't really allow us to do much. When it happened to my mom, I didn't really believe her that she couldn't drive it, but sure enough, I had the same experience.

Cheers,

Derek / 2002 9-5 linear 78K mi and new TB / 1994 900 S V6 176K mi
