It's probably the timing belt wandering back and forth between the sidewalls of one or more pulleys.
I have seen that a couple of times.
Timing belts are not always perfectly straight in their webbing so therefore the can move a little bit over the pulleys.
It is when they are way off it can create a problem since the belt might wear down over time.
When I do a timing belt, I always start the engine with timing cover off, both to see how the tensioner is set and also to make sure the belt is not "all over" the area.
