My 1999 2.3L is at just over 77k miles. Other than the minor warranty items (ECU, SID), it's been great! Last week a pulley seized and the belt broke. Got that fixed. Tonight, some 400 miles later, the engine died while going 50 mph on a flat stretch. Couldn't restart it and the check engine light was on. When I turned the key to put it into neutral to get it on the flatbed (note: engine not running), smoke started to come out from the engine. Seemed to be from under the cover to the spark plugs. I'm guessing a short, but something else must be up too... I've got a bad feeling but hope to get her back on the road shortly.
Thanks for listening
