Thanks for the interest and comments!
JB, this was installed in my 03 Silver AERO!
Frank is right, it's a Pioneer AVIC-Z2. Amazing product, hard drive NAV, XM Traffic support,Serius, iPod, BT, hard drive storage, touch screen... a lot more then what I needed or was looking for. It is the hottest head unit on the market. Retail is about $2,000 but do some hunting. Contrary to many posts on the net, there is a hack for this unit allowing you to use NAV and video while in motion. My installer was able to do it, it was one of my requirements...
I looked at Eclipse, Alpine, Kenwood, Clarion and Panasonic. Touch screen and HD based NAV is the way to go and make sure the unit had infer red control capabilities, this is how they get the steering wheel integration to work. They are all good units, each with drawbacks of their own... audio is very subjective... it you like it, get it.
We started off with the AVIC-Z2, Bluetooth, iPod, install with full integration with steering wheel controls for $2500. This was using the factory amps and speakers. The radio reception and sound was much better then stock but... there was a bit of switching hum caused by the factory amps.
I then had them install two Hyfonics amps and Almani speakers (not very well known but rival the Infinity speakers I listened to at a lower cost... I had to save $ somewhere...). This was a full days job for them due to all new wires and keeping the center channel live.
I've been using it for a full week now and cannot see how I lived without it. I drive a lot for work and my girlfriend and I travel together often. You can watch a DVD or play a movie from your video iPod along the drive, keeps her busy!
The only thing I'm going to do is to find out if I can take out the On-Star box located under the rear speaker deck so I can mount the amps a bit more flush.
Cheers!
Carlo
