My car was running fine with the exception of it feeling as if I was driving on a flat when I didn't warm it up a couple of weeks ago (I was in a rush). I had even taken it to a dealership for a complete inspection back in September to make certain I wouldn't be in for any surprises during the winter. While the ACC/Heating system is dead and I need a new brake booster and I need to fix the SID LEDs (like everyone else), they told me that the most urgent things were to replace 2 tires and get the emergency brake adjusted in order to pass inspection.
Anyway, I left work Friday night, eager to take a nap, as that late night online Christmas shopping isn't as clear and convenient as a bleary eyed person would like. I tried to start "Sag" (my green mica, 1999 Saab Sportswagon). The battery was fine, the starter kept trying, but it would not engage. Next scene, I'm at a local mechanic the next day, and it's the fuel pump. Fortunately, he was able to source one locally, although the nearest Saab dealership shut down 3 months ago. He also didn't have to use every part of the whole package so he was able to knock off $260! This wouldn't have happened at a dealership, probably no matter what good relationship you had with them.
BTW, please buy yourself a portable battery charger. While you have to recharge it after you use it and it should be charged quarterly, it is quite a convenience rather than to wait even for AAA for a jump. You're on your way in about 5 min. I'm not talking about the type that you have to plug in WHILE it's connecting to the car. It is a battery in and of itself. It has a light on it, too and can charge your cell phone or run a small TV off of it. I bought mine at Sears. It is a Diehard.
Good luck
