In particular, MY 2003 marked the first year of the latest version of the DIC hardware and the new software drive. GM predicted (in their letter to NHTSA something like 15 failures per 1000 vehicles over 10 years with the new hardware and software, vs. (the worst year) something like 850 failures per 1000 vehicles over 10 years for 2001. The cassettes were modified every year from 1999 through 2003, but obviously many of the revisions didn't help enough, and some did more harm than good. Note that in 2006 there was a "half" revision - the part number was changed to conform to GM's internal numbering system, but there was no change to the hardware itself. That also coincided with a recall of 2000-2002 cassettes and a temporary price drop on the part itself. Now that the recall has wound down, the price of the part is back up.
