I own (or owned) 6 9000's over the years, put on about 400K miles on them, and have had exceptionally good luck, much less maintainance than on the 3 classic 900's I've owned. I currently have a 94 Aero, Imola red, or course, purchased 2 years ago with 170k, that I just did my first repair on (replaced thermostat). Bought it from the original owner, now 70 years old, and he had service records back to day 1. Anytime something needed fixing, it got fixed. This guy even took the car to the dealership for tire rotations and taillight bulb replacement.
Buying any used car is a crapshoot, but knowing who the original owner was and having service records can really help minimize the risk. That said, once you're over 100k, repairs are a fact of life.
I enjoy the DIY aspect of Saab ownership. I'm currently trying to figure out what I'll do for recreation now that I've got an 04 sportwagon and I'm getting ready to sell the Aero.
