Yeah, maybe lost the serpentine...and in that case don't even start the car because the coolant pump is driven off that belt. Running w/o the belt for any period other than to maybe pull the car out of the garage will wreck your engine big time by causing it to overheat.
The other possibility is that maybe your alternator is just dead. If the alternator is bad, then you'll really deep-cyle your battery which will make it die and not want to charge again. Lead-acid auto batteries don't like being totally discharged and will fail quickly if they're subjected to deep discharges. If the car is running on a dead battery and the alternator isn't charging correctly, it could cause a low voltage situation and make things act really wacky.
Check the belt, if it's there, then have the alternator checked.
