Diagnosing Oil Pressure Sender

Have a '99 2.3lpt. Just got the fuel pump replaced last week, driving home the other day the oil light flickered a couple of times. I Checked the oil level - looked like it was down about half a quart, so I put some in. Started back up, no light, continued driving.
On the way to a wake tonight, oil light came on again. Pulled over, checked oil, down about a quarter, put more in. Started up, light still on. Waited a few minutes for a friend to stop by, started it up again - lo and behold, no light. Drove to the funeral, and it came on yet a third time. Waited a good half hour, light was off, drove 5 or 6 miles home.
This was a problem engine, did have a sludge problem. Had the pan cleaned out, new oil pump a good year and half, two years ago. I am desperately trying to get this thing to last a few more months. So I am hoping that it might be the sender gone bad.
What are some of the tell tale signs of a bad sender? I hate to have to have the thing towed 20 miles to my specialist mechanic just to test the oil pressure. I don't know if I dare drive that far with it as it is now. But I hate to think of spending that money to find out the thing is shot. So I am looking for some clues.
P.S. no idea about leaks - haven't noticed them, but with the weather we are having it is pretty hard to tell what is on the ground.
