I posted a few days back about a ever increasing noise - actually a rattle like sound coming from the accessory side of the I -4 . I pulled the engine brace and relieved the tension of the serp belt and checked all the pulleys for play, but concentrated on the large middle one as it's never been changed at 115K miles. they seemed ok, so I started the engine to see if I could pinpiont the noise, and it was much louder immediately after starting, the quited down but definately seemed to be from the serp belt and pulleys. So I then rechecked the pulleys and found the small top pulley was the culprit.
This surprised me as I replaced the serp belt and the upper pulley only at 80k miles, part bought from e-euro. When I replaced these both were in good shape, so I kept both belt and pulley. I examined the pulley and found I could easily take the seal off and examine and re-grease the bearings, had I known this I would have never wasted money at 80K buying a replacement pulley which much either be defective or junk as it failed after a mere 35K miles. The middle pulley seems fine after 115K miles.
I wish I could do this (re-grease) my front wheel bearings as was possible on my old 9000. I was also able to give the serp belt a good treatment of belt dressing with the engine brace removed.

So this took all of 45 minutes, and having time left over I decided to pull the NGKs and regap as these were installed at 90k and will need to last me another 10 or 15K . Yes these are non platinum type.

All in all a good day to be a "cheaptech" and the engine is now as quiet as ever.
