On top of what others say.
Would you be willing to pay for the labor to take the transmission down a second time if the first partial repair didn't work?
That's another thing to consider.
If one shop recommends to replace the transmission and the other shop are willing to take a chance on just replacing, let's say, the torque converter. Would you pay again to replace the transmission if the torque converter repair didn't work out.
With so much labor at stake, many shops might take the safer route and replace the whole transmission instead of risking the battle of having to convince the customer that they need to pay the same amount again in labor.
Because you can certainly not hold the shop liable if they are willing to work with in saving some money.
On these newer Aisin-Warner transmissions, I am very hesitant to promise anything when and if they start to act up. It's not often it happens but when it does, it is usually something bad.
