1. As a test, rotate your wheels from front to rear. This will either confirm or eliminate the tire/wheel as the cause.

While rotating the wheels, inspect for bulges on the inside and outside, in addition to other conditions such as cuts, punctures, or something that is stuck to or has punctured the tire. Also, do the obvious, check inflation pressure.

If the tire/wheel is determined to be the cause, you'll have to narrow this down to the wheel or the tire. Wheel damage can be determined through visual inspection and a check for wheel runout.

2. While coasting at a low speed where the thumping is pronounced, gently apply the brakes. If the vibration in the steering wheel becomes more pronounced, a warped front rotor may be the culprit. If the vibration in the seat of your pants becomes more pronounced, a warped rear rotor may be the culprit. A runout gauge can be used to measure the extent of rotor runout.

If a warped rotor is the cause, they should be replaced in pairs; pad thickness remaining should be the determinant regarding replacement of the pads at the same time......you'll have to take them out to replace the rotors.

If all of the above shows that the tire/wheel is not the cause, you'll have to move on to a wheel bearing constant or velocity joint as a possibility.
