Towing "insurance" is a big scam!

We've have always had towing insurance - it is "standard" with our policy - $75 per occurrence. The insurance companies will honor your claims for towing, BUT they also consider it a "ding" against your policy! 2 or more claims and they will attempt to dump you as a customer - OR raise your premiums. How do I know this? We recently had an elderly driver rear-end and total our 9-5 wagon while we were stopped at a light. When I read the papers the ins. co. sent to us, it showed another "claim" from last year: it was from a dead-battery incident that required towing.
My agent said that although the towing thing was completely non-driver related, it nonetheless stood as a "mark" against our policy. When the claim was processed for the totalled wagon (we got our deductible back as it was determined that the accident was 100% the other drivers' fault...) our agent mentioned that the ins. company would routinely go over our policy to see if we would be summarily "dumped" at next renewal, as we now had made 2 claims. Her advice was to use AAA or something like it.
YMMV, but check with your ins. agent.
